Marie, who left a corporate job in Missouri after contracting COVID-19 in the first wave and then developing what came to be known as long COVID, received five months of short-term disability through her employer. It was “a life-saver,” she said. But in 2022, she caught COVID again, and this time it’s taken much longer to recover from the long COVID that followed. “I’m suffering fatigue, brain fog and post-exertional malaise where if I do any small thing it exhausts me,” she said. Not knowing when or if she’ll be able to go back to work, Marie (who asked that only her middle…

Chris Evans got by with a little help from his friends in Ghosted. The Marvel alum stars in the new action-rom-com (now streaming on Apple TV+) as local farmer Cole, who gets ghosted after one amazing date by Sadie (Ana de Armas), who he’s convinced is “the one.” After flying to London in a grand romantic gesture to win her back, he accidentally gets dragged into an international spy mission to save the world — because it turns out Sadie is actually a CIA agent and not an international art curator like she told him. Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, and Ana de Armas in…
When the first Record Store Day took place in 2008, it came at a time when some of the independent shops it was championing were also struggling to stay open. The message to music lovers was: Celebrate your local shops, they really need it! Bruce LaVerne, who has been in the record store business since 1991, has owned The Vortex in downtown McMinnville since 2003. Back then there was a lot of competition for consumers’ music spending. “Best Buy was at its peak. You had Fry’s, you had all these major retailers, the usual, with Amazon coming up,” LaVerne said.…
Delicious, sweet and full of saturated fat, the concept of ice-cream as a health food is as ridiculous as it is compelling. But in what will be welcome news for many as Britain basks in warmer weather this week, an American public health historian has revealed how numerous studies over several decades have repeatedly found mysterious potential health benefits of the frozen dessert – only to be glossed over by scientists. In an article for the Atlantic magazine, David Merritt Johns said he first started looking into the claims last summer, after hearing about some 2018 research by a Harvard doctoral student which…
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai received $226 million in total compensation in 2022, most of which came through stock awards, according to a securities report filed by the company on Friday. Pichai was awarded $218 million in equities last year through a triennial stock grant. His annual salary was $2 million from 2020 to 2022, the filing stated. The CEO’s compensation package also included almost $6 million for personal security in 2022. Other Alphabet and Google principal executives made approximately $22 million to $35 million in annual stock awards, according to the filing. The report comes as Alphabet is initiating cost restructuring measures, including layoffs…
Massachusetts officials unveiled a new initiative Thursday to make it easier for people returning from state prisons to obtain a state-issued ID — considered a critical first step for successful reentry after incarceration. Under the new agreement signed last fall, the Registry of Motor Vehicles and the Department of Correction pledged to coordinate information on inmates coming up for release so that they can be issued a state ID by the time they leave prison. Under the agreement, the RMV will have a mobile work unit that can travel to correctional facilities to help process the IDs. At a roundtable…
A coastal mystery continues along the eastern US, as eight dolphins were found washed ashore in New Jersey on Tuesday. They landed about 20 miles south of Atlantic City where relief teams spent hours working to revive the animals. Two of the dolphins died before workers arrived. The other six were euthanised to “prevent further suffering”. Over a dozen dead whales have been found along the US East Coast since December. The dolphins arrival to Sea Isle City adds to the mystery of recent marine deaths along the eastern US. Video coverage from BBC’s US media partner CBS shows officials…
THATCHER – Eastern Arizona College President Todd Haynie welcomed Mexican Ambassador Ricardo Pineda Albarrán and Arizona House Speaker Rusty Bowers to an event that commemorated the 200th anniversary of U.S.-Mexico bilateral relations. A group of nearly 40 elected officials and community leaders also attended the commemoration. “We are standing on the campus of Eastern Arizona College which is located just south of the Gila River in Arizona,” said Haynie. “Prior to the Gadsden Purchase in 1854, this would be part of Mexico. Thirty-four years later, in 1888, Eastern Arizona College was founded as the St. Joseph Stake Academy. The reach of…
